Batcave full process

Hey there guys. This time I'll take you through the process on creating my version of the Batcave from scratch to final colors.

1. Sketch. First of all I did a 2x2" thumbnail of the batcave just to get an idea of what I wanted.

2. Building perspective. After I scanned the thumbnail, I used Manga Studio Ex 4 software to create a grid on which my perspective lines would lie, and created a background architecture for the cave.

3. Blue line printing. Once I had the perspective lines and the grids in place, I printed a blue line penciled version of the whole thing on an 11x17  comic book bristol paper. I have a Brother Printer that prints to size. It's really cool, I recommend it 100% it is a very good investment.

4. Inks.

5. Coloring

A) Flats
Using Photoshop CS5 I flatted all the figures in the piece. This is called Flats stage. This helps you to make selecting everything instantly. Be sure to keep a separate layer with the flats.

B) Rendering
Once I have picked up the base colors, I start using different techniques to color or "render" the drawing.

Dinosaurs in NY

This assignment was a double spread for narrative art II, where we had to chose between either dinosaurs and aliens. I obviously picked up the dinosaurs in N.Y. because I have never draw them before. I also thought it was a good opportunity to throw in a shout out for some of my friends books back in Monterrey. (which if you don't know, is my hometown, and a very awesome kick ass city).

Hello my friends! Long time no see. I know that I have been away for a long time, but I really try to give it my very best at school, and that takes up time and dedication. Fortunately I can still update this from time to time, just like Red from Shawshank redemption.

This one was done for an assignment at school, but I liked it so much that I made it my new avatar for almost everything. I'm also using it on my business cards.

Daily sketch Dump

For the past 2 weeks I've set myself a daily goal, that is to produce a daily sketch with a semi Convention look as warmup for the day, using Copics™ and inks, and to do it under an hour time. I think it is a fair goal and sometimes is hard to keep up, but at least during the week I've been able to do it. And I aim to keep doing it, because I slowly see improvement.

Right now I'm using my friends as subject matter, its easier for me and I give it as a present for them. I feel that having the capacity for art is a responsibility, and I want to give back something to all the people that have been good and kind to me. In this way I practice and they get something that hopefully will last for a long time, so everybody wins.

Done as a project for one of my classes. The instructions were design a wrap around cover with two distinct focal points, one in front and one in the back that together could work as a poster.

I don't have the colored version yet, because the only thing that I have finished after the inks is just the color flats, and I don't consider that to be worthy of being published. So bear with me, I'll post it when I'm done with the colors.

There is nothing new to say about the process, just that in this piece I played with an overlay layer to give a couple of shiny light outline as if there is some sort of lights from very far away.

I´ve been in a whirlwind of things because of my imminent leave to NJ to study illustration. So yeah, I haven´t posted anything in a while. Sue me. Just kidding don´t sue me. Like me on Facebook.

Daily Sketching

I'm gonna try to keep a daily sketch for as long as I can. I have to force myself to do this. There will always be a reason not to do it.

And that just won't do.

Art Jam 12: The Crow

90's rule

Tribute to The Crow.

Sketched during last week's ArtJam! and colored yesterday.

I kinda rushed the coloring and decided to do it Cell Shaded style because of the time I had to my disposal. I was sick with the flu last week, and I kinda slacked off for a bit. I know that is not an excuse :P

Done in Photoshop CS5. Around 5 hours.

Cell Shaded Wonder Woman

It started out as a warm up, but sometimes this babies just have a life of their own. Soon I realize that It could turn into my very first Wonder Woman piece, so I just went along with it.

And just after I began coloring it, I decided this could be my very first Cell Shaded experiment. I always loved how MetalHanzo and Lastscionz do their his anime-ish coloring so this was my shot at it. And I have to say I like a lot the way it came up. I'm too planning on doing many more like this one. It can't hurt to have different styles on one's art repertoire.
